Alberta > Renting a Place to Live > Landlords > Abandonment:

  • One of my tenants had not paid her rent for last month. I went to visit her and I found that her mail had not been picked up for three weeks. I went into the apartment and found her belongings were gone. The neighbours say that they have not seen her for a while. Is it sufficient to treat this as a case of abandonment? What can I do?
  • One of my tenants abandoned an apartment that he was supposed to rent for another six months under a fixed-term lease. I was able to serve him with court documents at his sister's house. I am claiming for lost rent for the last six months of the lease. He has written back to say that I will not be able to recover the whole six months. Is this right?
