Why did the government create the Child Support Guidelines?
There
was confusion across the country (and even within provinces) about
child support awards. The amounts ordered varied greatly from court
to court and judge to judge. Family law lawyers and judges were
concerned about the lack of consistency and the resulting sense
that there could be a lack of fairness. The federal government hoped
to address this problem by providing the Guidelines.
