National > Divorce > Federal Child Support Guidelines:

Who counts as a child under the Guidelines?

The Divorce Act has redefined who is a child to take into account the Child Support Guidelines. A child is anyone under the age of majority (which in some provinces is 18 and in others is 19), including adopted children and step-children, who are still under their parent's control and to whom the person paying support acts as a parent. It also includes children over the age of majority who are obtaining a "reasonable education" or who cannot withdraw from their parent's control or be self-supporting because of a disability or some other reason.
