What is considered a "special expense"?

Special expenses are other circumstances that a judge might consider in changing the child support amount that is determined by the Guidelines. They include

  • childcare expenses paid by the parent with whom the child lives (including daycare fees and nanny expenses );
  • the part of a parent's medical or dental insurance premiums that provide coverage for a child;
  • a child's health care needs that are not covered by insurance;
  • extraordinary private school expenses or other education-related expenses;
  • post-secondary education expenses;
  • extraordinary expenses for extracurricular activities.
