Why does the law recognize copyright?

Copyright is a means of encouraging creativity. Copyright law basically protects an author's right to benefit economically from the exploitation of his or her creative work. By protecting an author's economic interests, it is believed that an author will be encouraged to produce innovations that will benefit all of society.
