What has to be done to create copyright?

Copyright "subsists" as soon as an original, tangible work is produced. This means that copyright in a work is created automatically, at the same time the work is created.

For example, as soon as you have written the first paragraph in your great Canadian novel, copyright in those words has been created, provided that your expression has been unique and original. This creates the potential for much argument over who was the first person to create a work.
