Are there any requirements to be an author of a work protected by copyright?

Anyone can be an author, but in order to be protected by Canadian copyright law, an author must meet certain requirements. Most importantly, the author must be a citizen or subject of, or ordinarily live in, a country that

  • has signed the Berne Convention on copyright protection, or
  • has signed the Universal Copyright Convention on copyright protection, or
  • belongs to the World Trade Organization.
