My elderly father is having more and more difficulty in managing his affairs and living independently. I would like to take over his banking, bill paying and so on for him. What should I do?
In Alberta, there is a provincial law called the Dependent Adults Act. This law is meant to help people in your situation and that of your father. It allows an interested person to apply for a court order giving guardianship of a dependent adult to the person applying. An "interested person" is defined as meaning "any person who is concerned for the welfare of the person in respect of whom a guardianship order or trusteeship order is sought or has been obtained". Other interested persons could be the Public Trustee or the Public Guardian, both appointed civil servants with a mandate to apply when necessary to protect dependent persons.
