What is the purpose of International Qualifications Assessment Service assessments?

Back to Top

International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) assessments may be used for:

  • seeking employment;
  • applying for admission to a post-secondary institution; and
  • applying for professional registration.

IQAS assessments provide helpful information but do not limit an employer, post-secondary institution, or professional licensing body from making its own decision about whether a person is suitable for a position. An IQAS evaluation is often just one factor that is being considered in the above decisions.

Who needs an International Qualifications Assessment Service evaluation?

Back to Top

An International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) evaluation is for people who have educational credentials obtained outside of Canada and want them recognized by a Canadian employer, professional association or post-secondary institution. IQAS provides an assessment certificate that shows how international educational credentials compare to Alberta’s education standards.

What type of credentials does the International Qualifications Assessment Service evaluate?

Back to Top

International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) evaluates credentials awarded from recognized institutions following the completion of formal academic educational programs. It does not evaluate trade or apprenticeship training or experiential learning. IQAS evaluates only credentials received from outside of Canada.

How do International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) evaluations benefit employers?

Back to Top

The assessment process of international credentials is complex and time consuming. International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) evaluations help employers to understand candidates’ educational credentials by providing clear, well-researched, accurate, and timely assessments. An understanding of international credentials is a valuable tool for hiring skilled and qualified staff.

I work in the trades and was told that the assessment I got from the International Qualifications Assessment Service is not enough to get a job in Alberta. How do get my trade skills recognized in Alberta?

Back to Top

Contact the trades assessment consultants at Advanced Education and Technology (Apprenticeship and Industry Training). They will assess your training and work experience for the designated trades recognized in Alberta. Each application is reviewed based on the criteria for the trade.

More information on how to do this is available through the Credentials and Certifications link on our page of External Resources.
