Fireworks

Can I set off fireworks in Edmonton?

Only licensed professionals with a permit can set off fireworks in Edmonton. Individuals cannot set off fireworks.

To set off fireworks on public or private land, you must:

  • have a fireworks operator certification from Natural Resources Canada and
  • have a Commercial General Liability insurance policy for at least $5 million that names the City as an additional insured and
  • apply for and receive a fireworks permit from Edmonton Fire Rescue Services.

Apply for the permit early as it can take at least 10 working days to process and issue the permit. The permit fee ranges from $100 to $181, depending on the type of permit.

Even with a permit, the fireworks operator must check for fire bans and make sure weather conditions are safe before using fireworks.

The fine for using fireworks illegally can be up to $10,000. In some cases, you can also be charged with a criminal offence.

Can I set off fireworks in Calgary?

Only licensed professionals with a permit can set off fireworks in Calgary. Individuals cannot set off fireworks.

To set off fireworks on public or private land, you must:

  • have a fireworks operator certification from Natural Resources Canada and
  • have a Commercial General Liability insurance policy for at least $5 million that names the City of Calgary or the Calgary Fire Department as an additional insured and
  • apply for and receive a fireworks permit from the Calgary Fire Department.

Apply for the permit early as it can take up to 10 working days to process and issue the permit. The permit fee starts at $392 (plus GST) and depends on the number of days for the fireworks display.

Even with a permit, the fireworks operator must check for fire bans and make sure weather conditions are safe before using fireworks.

The consequences for a first offence of using fireworks illegally is a fine of $100,000, up to 6 months in jail, or both. Repeat offenders can be fined up to $500,000, up to 12 months in jail, or both.

Can I set off fireworks on my own property?

It depends where you live. Each municipality makes its own rules about fireworks. Some only allow licensed professionals with a permit from the municipality to set off fireworks. Others allow individuals with a permit to set off fireworks, even on their own property.

Contact your municipality for more information. The consequences for illegally setting off fireworks can be expensive fines and even jail time.

Where do I report illegal or dangerous use of fireworks?

In non-emergency situations: In Edmonton or Calgary, call 311 or file a complaint on the 311 app. In other municipalities, contact the bylaw enforcement office.

In emergency situations: Call 911 to report hazards, such as a fire.
